Originally from a small town in the Netherlands, Wilhelmina – who goes by Wil – came to the United States over 30 years ago and ended up staying put. In a strange twist of fate, she found herself in the relocation industry, helping other new arrivals find their footing. Although she’s now happy to call the US home, there are still things she misses from the country where she grew up.
When did you come to the US? I came to the US in 1986. We have been living in Arizona now since 2017.
What was the most difficult thing you experienced with your move? The most difficult thing about moving all the way to the US from the Netherlands was missing friends and family. Back in those days it still cost a dollar per minute to call home.
What do you miss the most from home? I would say that after all these years away, I still miss my family and friends the most. Roots go deep and my family has been blessed to be able to go back almost every year. It’s important that my children know my side of the family too so we’ve kept it a priority.
How did you get into relocation? I kind of stumbled into it, working for you. As the company grew into the relocation business, I was there at the right place at the right time.
How long have you been with us? I’ve been with you for 27 years now.
What do you like the most about your job? I love the people and business ethics. You truly cares about employees and its customers and it shows in everything they do.
I’ve got 24 hours on the ground in your home city, what should I be sure to go and see or do? My home town is a small town with a big heart. People know each other and care of each other. Take a walk through town, check out the old windmill, step into the community center, play some billiards or a hand of cards with the locals and get to know them. You’ll never want to leave.
Is there a local/regional food item that is both awesome and unique to your hometown or area? It’s funny when you see the things you grew up with on the TV Show “Strange Eats”. One of my favorite Dutch treats is smoked eel. It’s very tender, a real delicacy. I shared one with my dad every time I went back.
